The program consists of five individual modules of learning; each module of learning begins with a pre-module confidence assessment which reviews your confidence in managing the care of the sick neonate. The same confidence assessment tool is used at the end of the program to review your confidence at the completion of the module. This tool is used by the programmers to review if your confidence has increased or decreased through the use of the education intervention.
After you have completed the pre-module confidence test you commence the module. Each module is designed to provide you with a clinical scenario where you explore the care of the neonate from the commencement of your shift or admission through the initial assessment to stabilization and diagnosis.
As you navigate through the module you are provided with information including clinical signs and test results to determine priorities of care. You are asked questions relating to the neonate and required to make a decisions, at these points you are provided with multiple options. If you choose the correct option you can progress with the module if the incorrect option is selected you are provided with a rationale for why the choice is incorrect, potential clinical ramifications relating to the decision and are directed to reselect from the available options.
The program is timed; you are given a limited time to make a decision as critical thinking is thought to be best developed when accompanied by a clinical focus, incorporating realistic variables such as time constraints, sufficient and realistic information cues and realistic outcomes.
Multiple education points are provided for individuals seeking additional information throughout the module, at the completion of the program you are provided with a list of key questions to consider in relation to the decisions made in the context of the neonate’s clinical management. Additional resources (journal articles and websites) are listed for nurses seeking information relating to the components explored.
Participants are provided with a summary page outlining their decisions, and highlighting areas for ongoing professional development relating to the module. A certificate of completion outlining the completion of continuing professional development points is emailed at the completion of each module.
All results from the module (including pre and post confidence testing) remain confidential, any data collected by the programmers is de-identified. You may be contacted by the P.E.D.A.L.O Program following registration notifying you of the addition of new learning modules to the eLearning platform.
